Statement of Congressman Rob Wittman Honoring Veterans of Afghanistan

Tuesday, August 17, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) issued the following statement:

"Those who served in Afghanistan did so with exemplary valor and unquestionable honor. For two decades, the United States dominated the battlefield. We established a democratic government. We secured freedom for the Afghan people. For many veterans of Afghanistan, watching the chaos they held at bay for nearly twenty years unfold so rapidly has been heart-wrenching.

"Fault for this collapse lies with the suits in Washington, not the boots on the ground. Thanks to the efforts of America's servicemen and women, the United States remains a beacon of hope to the entire world. And as long as that beacon of hope remains lit, there will be those who try to extinguish it.

"Our nation continues to depend on our Armed Forces to secure freedom at home and inspire hope throughout the world. Wherever evil shall rear its head, it will know our nation's warfighters stand ready to fight and win in even the most challenging operational environments.

"As always, we pray for peace. But I rest easier at night knowing our Armed Forces stand ready, no matter where the fight may take them. Words cannot express my gratitude for the service and sacrifice of America's men and women in uniform.

"May God bless our troops, and may God bless America in this dark time."
