November 21, 2011: Wittman Outraged at Supercommittee Failure

Monday, November 21, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, today released the following statement upon the news that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, or the "super committee," failed to propose solutions for the nation's federal budget:

"Our country is facing an ever-growing mountain of debt, and I am outraged that the members of the super committee were unable to put forward a plan to stop this growth of reckless spending," Wittman said. "Unfortunately, the super committee chose failure over making tough choices for the greater good of this country. Washington has again shown that they don't get it; they are out-of-touch with a country of citizens looking for decisive leadership. The folks I talk to in America's First District are looking for Washington to work together. I supported the approach to find solutions, to work together to solve the nation's spending issues. I am bitterly disappointed with the super committee's failure to carry out their charge.

"The failure of the super committee will no doubt irreparably harm our nation, but especially the Department of Defense, which faces greater challenges than any other with this lack of a plan to move forward. The nation's highest-ranking military leaders have warned Congress that failure by the super committee would be "catastrophic," that "sequestration" would cause "irreversible damage" to our nation's armed forces. Failure is an outcome we must not and cannot accept. I will continue to work for solutions and encourage the folks in Washington that solutions must be found, to address the real drivers of our debt."

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee where he is the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
