November 21, 2008: Congressman Wittman Announces Improvement and Extension of Colonial Parkway Trail

Friday, November 21, 2008

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congressman Rob Wittman announced the allocation of funds from the Federal Highway Administration for the improvement and construction of a mixed use trail along the Colonial Parkway, located in the Colonial National Historic Park.

"I'm excited to see the development and improvement of this trail at America's birthplace. It's important that we continue to create safe and open access for visitors to this historic landmark," said Wittman.

"It's my hope that these improvements will boost tourism by providing a safe environment for both pedestrians and bicyclists traveling between Historic Jamestowne and the Jamestown Settlement, including all major attractions located along the Colonial Parkway," said Wittman.

The National Park Service will receive a one time grant of $647, 955 to begin the regrading and resurfacing of an existing trail at the Glasshouse turnout along the Parkway to meet all Americans with Disabilities Act standards, as well as construction of a new segment of the trail to extend along the Colonial Parkway. After its completion, the trail will connect Historic Jamestowne and the Jamestown Settlement museum, as well as tie the byway into the Virginia Capital Trail. The Capital Trail is a 54-mile shared-use trail currently under construction that highlights the historic and natural resources along the Route 5 Scenic Byway between Richmond and Williamsburg. This trail improvement project is construction ready and will also include replacing deteriorated wooden fencing and the installation of five new wayside exhibits.
