April 22, 2010: Congressman Wittman Supports Measure on Earmark Reform

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman cosponsored the Earmark Reform Resolution, introduced by Congressman Bob Goodlatte, to reform the earmark process and save taxpayers' money.

"The spending in Washington has gotten out of control, with the budget deficit expected to exceed one trillion dollars over the next two years.  We are spending at an unsustainable rate, and this Earmark Reform Resolution takes a small step in the right direction," Wittman said.

"I was glad to see the Republican Conference follow my lead and ban all earmarks for one year.  There is no doubt that the earmark process is broken, and before we move forward, we must reform the way we do business.  However, not one penny of taxpayer money will be saved unless spending is cut by the same amount of money saved by the ban on earmarks.

This Resolution would do exactly that," said Wittman. The Resolution would require that money saved from the Republican ban on earmarks be put toward deficit reduction. The resolution would also create a bipartisan and bicameral committee to review and overhaul the budgetary, spending, and earmark process.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his first full term in November 2008 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
