Should Congress go on vacation?

It's the middle of June and already some in Congress are looking forward to the annual August recess.
But anyone who follows what goes on in Washington knows there is still critical work to be done. Of most pressing concern is the 2018 budget and 12 appropriations bills.
Failure to pass such critical legislation could result in the implementation of another continuing resolution, or "CR." These bills simply fund the government at the previous year's overall top line spending figure, denying federal agencies, particularly the Department of Defense, the certainty needed to operate effectively.
When I am working in Virginia, the one thing I hear repeatedly is "you guys need to do your jobs and get something done up there in Washington." Well with fewer than forty legislative days until the end of the fiscal year, I believe Congress should remain in Washington until the work is complete. I introduced legislation in January to keep Congress in-session during August and even sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to keep the House in-session until we finish our legislative "to do" list.
