Friends - On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Power and Oceans held an oversight hearing on the creation and management of marine monuments and sanctuaries. The panel overwhelmingly objected to the lack of local input, transparency and scientific scrutiny in the marine monument designation process. I pressed the panel on issues surrounding marine monuments and sanctuaries that take fishing management decisions away from states and transfer them to federal bureaucrats... Read more

Dear Friend - Last week I sent a letter to the White House. My message was simple: protect the Chesapeake Bay. Specifically, I, along with a bipartisan group of concerned members of the House, asked President Trump to include $73 million for the Chesapeake Bay Program in the Fiscal Year 2018 budget. The letter also states how critical federal funds are for the continued health of the Bay, and I hope the White House takes our request seriously. You can read the rest of the letter we sent to the W... Read more

Growing up in the town of Montross on the Northern Neck of Virginia, I learned early that when you’re outdoors, there are no ugly places. I can’t say how many boyhood afternoons I spent with a line in the water, watching the sun sink beyond the horizon, or how many days I spent wandering in the woods with my dad. But what I can say is that, for me and for so many Americans, the time spent in the great outdoors was foundational. It laid the groundwork for what I would become—a biologist and an ou... Read more
