Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Before serving in Congress, I earned a master’s degree in public health and spent more than 26 years working for the Virginia Department of Health, so I understand that affordable healthcare is top-of-mind for Virginians. Health policy is never just theoretical — the decisions made in Washington have real consequences for families, seniors, small businesses, and healthcare providers across Virginia.
Let me be clear: I do not support government-run health care or permanently expanding the federal government’s role in our health care system. I believe competition, innovation, transparency, and patient choice are the best ways to lower costs and improve care.
However, guided by the input of thousands of constituents, I voted to support a temporary extension of Affordable Care Act premium tax credits in January.
When these enhanced premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025, many Virginians who purchased coverage through the health insurance marketplace were facing significant and immediate premium increases. For some families, monthly costs would have risen dramatically overnight.
Allowing rate increases to take effect without any transition does not solve the deeper structural problems in our health care system. That is why I supported a strictly temporary, three-year extension of these tax credits.
I remain committed to opposing permanent expansions of federal health care programs and continuing to reform the system. We need solutions that increase competition, improve price transparency, expand access to personalized care, and give patients and families more control over their health care decisions and finances.
My goals remain the same: protect Virginians and ensure families have access to quality, affordable care.
Sincerely,

Rob Wittman
Member of Congress, Virginia’s 1st District
