Document Guide for Driver's Licenses and ID Cards

Use this guide to determine which documents to bring to DMV when you apply for a Virginia driver's license, driver privilege card, learner's permit, commercial driver's license (CDL) or ID card, or upgrade your current credential to REAL ID. Enter correct information to obtain an accurate list.

Beginning May 7, 2025, the federal government will require you to present a REAL ID compliant credential or another approved form of identification in order to board a domestic flight or to access some secure federal facilities. Effective immediately, some military bases may no longer accept non-REAL ID compliant credentials which display “Federal Limits Apply.” Please verify identification requirements prior to your visit.

Ready to upgrade your Virginia driver's license to a REAL ID? Get started now by filling out your application. Or learn more at dmvNOW.com/REALID.

Depending on the credential you are applying for, you will need original documents that prove the following:
  • Identity
  • Legal presence in the United States
  • Social security number, if you have been issued one
  • Virginia residency
  • Proof of Reported Income and/or Deductions from a Virginia Source as defined in Va. Code §58.1-302

All documents are subject to verification.

Carefully read each screen, follow the instructions and enter correct information for best results.
