Update on my work to support veterans

Dear Friend -

Knowing that you share my concern and interest in supporting our nation's veterans, I wanted to update you on my latest work in this critical area.

Earlier this week I convened a meeting of my First District Veterans Advisory Council. This gathering was part of my ongoing efforts to hear directly from veteran constituents who have first-hand knowledge of the issues facing veterans in our community. We had a productive meeting and I received a lot of great feedback to take up to Washington.

I also highlighted for the group legislation passed by the House aimed at improving quality of life for our veterans and improving customer service within the VA. Those bills, all of which I strongly support, are explained briefly below.

The VA Accountability First Act of 2017 would provide the VA Secretary increased flexibility to remove, demote, or suspend any VA employee, including Senior Executive Service employees, for poor performance or misconduct.

The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act would prohibit the VA from considering any beneficiary who is assisted by a fiduciary as “mentally defective” without a magistrate or judicial authority ruling that the beneficiary is a danger to themselves or others.

H.R. 1367 strengthens the VA’s ability to identify staffing shortages, recruit employees to fill vacant positions, quickly on-board new hires, and retain high-performing workers across the country. It also contains provisions that would improve leadership and accountability throughout VA and increase the number of veterans in the federal workforce.

I hope you will contact me any time an issue that concerns you is before Congress, especially if it involves supporting our veterans and our national defense.

It's an honor to serve you and Virginia's First District in the People's House.

Sincerely,

Rob
