Washington, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) released the following statement today on the House Natural Resources Committee oversight hearing, “Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Strategy and Implications of the Deepwater Horizon Rig Explosion”:
“Like most Americans, I’ve watched with increasing alarm and frustration as the Gulf oil spill has continued for over a month. The fire, sinking and tragic loss of 11 crewmembers of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig is a true tragedy. The ongoing oil spill now threatens the Gulf with significant ecological and economic disaster.
“Today’s Natural Resource Committee hearing is a critical opportunity to address ongoing efforts to stop the oil leak and clean-up the spill while ensuring proper oversight of the federal agencies responsible for offshore energy production. It’s also important to ask the questions about any ancillary affects it might have on Virginia fisheries.
“We must make every effort to ensure that federal agencies are effectively structured to regulate offshore drilling, while protecting the environment and meeting our nation’s energy demands.”
Congressman Wittman recently visited the Gulf Coast to survey the situation. You can watch his dialogue from today with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar here, and his reaction video here.

Washington, DC – Today, the House Armed Services Committee adopted an amendment authored by Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) aimed at helping military spouses with employment programs and opportunities. The amendment was accepted during consideration of H.R. 5136, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011 (NDAA) and will be included in the annual legislation as it moves forward.
“We cannot thank our military families enough for their service to our country. Each and every day they make true sacrifices to support their family members serving in harm’s way and we are all truly grateful. I am pleased that the Committee today adopted my measure to ensure we adequately support military spouses with employment opportunities and programs. This report will be key to review the current programs and policies in place, and if changes are needed, to recommend what we can do to reform those policies to improve our support of military families,” Wittman said.
The amendment directs the Government Accountability Office to conduct a study and provide an overview of what the Department of Defense is currently doing to support military spouses with employment programs and opportunities. In addition, the report must also provide recommendations on how the Department of Defense can improve current programs.
Congressman Wittman is committed to supporting military families around the nation and in Commonwealth of Virginia, and is a member of the Congressional Military Families Caucus.

Washington, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) today released the following statement regarding the new federal strategy to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay:
“The Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure; everyone across the watershed is committed to restoring and protecting this special estuary. We all know the Bay is a resource rich in heritage, commerce, and recreation. Taking steps to restore the Bay is a top priority of mine.
“It’s critical for the Administration to focus on Chesapeake Bay restoration activities. For the last year, the executive branch agencies have been developing this new strategy to clean up the Bay. Today’s announcement lays out a comprehensive federal effort to restore water quality, fish and wildlife and protect habitat. Coordination and execution is key to achieve meaningful progress in these efforts. While this is a significant milestone in clean-up efforts, much work remains for localities, states and the federal government to restore the Bay. I will continue my work in Washington to ensure a healthy Bay.”
Background
With over 16 years of experience as a shellfish specialist monitoring water quality and environmental health issues in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, Congressman Wittman has championed efforts for Bay restoration and protection. Last year, the House of Representatives passed legislation authored by Wittman, the Chesapeake Bay Accountability and Recovery Act (H.R. 1053), to monitor and coordinate the Bay restoration efforts amongst 10 federal agencies, six states and the District of Columbia, and over one thousand localities and multiple non-governmental organizations.
